Make Something Monday : Custom Makeably Drawing

I really am enjoying being a part of the new startup, Makeably.

Anastasia and Ryan, the founders, are former Google employees who both thought it would be awesome to have a site devoted to making custom items. They recently launched the site and I was privileged to be part of the launch.

Here is my most recent project: A drawing of a very happy couple. I love getting more practice drawing different people and in this case using color!

Thanks for reading guys, and please check out Makeably!

Make Something Monday : Update on Celebrity Paper Dolls

I told you guys a little while back that I was going to start making articulated (moveable) paper dolls inspired by old Hollywood stars.

I just sold an order of 6 of these guys to Louisville, Kentucky. It was nice to have such a large order and to figure out just how I wanted to package them.

I used chipboard, paper, and cello bags. Each doll came with a one of their famous quotes.

Here’s a picture of them before the were shipped away to Kentucky:

🙂 Have a great week guys!

Thursday – Things for Free!!! – Contest Closed

My Adele Paper Doll

I am starting my first contest open to those who follow my blog and facebook.

As I mentioned in my post yesterday I have been adding a lot of “paper people” to my shop.

Now I want to also offer custom moveable paper people. That means paper people that look like you or anyone else that you want them to look like.

The Prize:

To get my custom paper people started, I want to offer you a chance to get your own custom paper person drawn for FREE! I will use this custom paper person as an example of the custom paper people I can create.

Here’s how you enter the contest:

Check out my shop, Pieces of Elise’s on Etsy, and leave a comment here about why you would like a custom articulated paper person (this type) and who it would be a drawing of. Then visit my Pieces of Elise’s Facebook page and “like” the page and leave a second, separate comment here letting me know that you did. (That means you can enter up to 2 times – but no more than 2.)

When to Enter:

You can enter the contest now until July 4th at 12 noon central time.

Winner Announcement:

I will make a blog post announcing the winner Thursday, July 5th. I will be using Random.org to select the winner. The winner must email me within 24 hours to claim their prize – or I’ll have to choose another winner.

If you win please send me a photo of the person you’d like me to draw as a custom articulated paper person. Then I will ask that you allow me up to 3-4 weeks to complete your custom person 🙂 I also will be using the drawing as an example in future listings for custom paper people in my shop.

Make Something Monday : Want a Tutorial?

I love tutorials. When I was 16 I decided to stop wearing my hair chemically relaxed and started growing out my naturally tightly curled hair. It was a bit scary to me, until I discovered that on youtube thousands of women were doing or had already done the same thing successfully. They provided great tutorials that showed how they achieved their intricate hairstyles and I found that with the help of the tutorials I could imitate their styles on my own hair.

My start on a logo for my hair site

Tutorials aren’t just great for hair, their great for anything really. If you are interested in getting a hair tutorial – check out my blog Coifs and Plaits!

I plan to be creating artwork on a more regular basis and posting here what I made. Make something Mondays will tell you how I made featured projects. Have an idea of something you’d like me to make and to write up a tutorial for? Please post your ideas! Or maybe you made a tutorial yourself that you want to share? Go for it!

Make Something Monday: Celebrity Paper Dolls Week 2

So last week I made my first celebrity paper doll, Audrey Hepburn, and now I’m hooked!

I’ve made 7 other celebs:

Elizabeth Taylor…

Ginger Rogers…

Fred Astaire…

Gene Kelly…

Debbie Reynolds…

Adele…

Sara Bareilles…

They are all currently listed in my Etsy shop. Do you make any celebrity-themed items yourself?

If you suggest who I should make next I’ll do it 😀 !

Make Something Monday: Celebrity Paper Dolls

As I promised yesterday, today I started making an Audrey Hepburn paper doll. Honestly (and from hearing my former graphic artist mom’s opinion) I know I need to tweak some things in order to really make a doll that looks like Audrey. I’m still happy with how she looks.

I also tried making an Elizabeth Taylor doll.

Here they are together…

My plan is to make lots of celebrity paper dolls. I know I’ll enjoy it and it will be an exercise in improving my accuracy in drawing people. Check out my shop to see more of my creations. Thanks for stopping by 🙂

1 Word Wednesdays : Paper People

Before you scroll down and get bombarded by images of my paper dolls – who I call “paper people”, this probably deserves some back story.

When I was really little my mom bought me a Belle (from “Beauty and the Beast”) paper doll – the kind with clothes that you could put on by folding the tabs behind her. Something happened to Belle and I sort of forgot about paper dolls for a while and was pretty content with Barbies and legos. Then when I was about 9 I think “Toy Story” and “The Borrowers” made me start thinking about how cool it would be to make miniature people and to write about their little lives and pretend that they are secretly living in my room without anyone else knowing but me. Silly maybe, but I became completely engrossed in creating paper people, making weird families and writing their family trees. Yes, I had a strange obsession with genealogy – which probably stemmed from my strange family tree.

I made paper people from the time I was 9 to 13. Then I stopped and placed all 300 or so in a shoe box under my bed.

I revived the paper people making about a year ago when I added them to my Etsy shop. So far I have sold a lot more than I expected, some even landing in a gallery!

So please take a look at my paper people. The ones with the metal brads I made recently, but there are also images of ones I made in the past.
